Maximizing Space in Your Dorm

Moving into a dorm is an exciting milestone, but small spaces can be tricky to organize while adding your own personal touches. The good news? A few simple updates can make your room feel twice as functional (and way more you).

Let’s explore some of the ways you can maximize space in your dorm:

1. Use a Rug to Make the Room Feel Bigger

Adding a rug is one of the easiest ways to make a small room feel more expansive. A pattern or light color defines the area while helping to draw the eye outward.

  • Tip: Choose a washable rug for your dorm room; they’re really easy to clean and often have a flat pile for even easier placement.

Once your rug is in place, layer in a colorful blanket and some pillows to add a bit more depth to the space.

2. Set the Mood with Table Lamps

Overhead lighting is often harsh. Table lamps are a smart way to add softer lighting without taking up precious floor space. A compact lamp sits neatly on a desk or nightstand and (of course) doubles as a cute piece of décor. Try using an Edison bulb for a relaxing glow while curling up with your favorite book.

3. Build vertically

When floor space is limited, look to accessories that can help you make the most of what you do have. An often-overlooked space is what’s under the bed. Bed risers create valuable storage space for bins and baskets.

This way, you can store away things like extra sheets, seasonal clothes, and more while keeping the room organized.

4. Use damage-free hanging

Dorm rules often prohibit the use of nails. Because of this, removable adhesive strips are the go-to for dorm-friendly hanging. Be sure to check the front label to see how much weight the strips can hold before you buy. Brands like Command typically sell strips designed for photo hanging.
